Steve Keener always liked bikes.
When he was a kid, he used to ride his bicycle around local construction zones like some sort
of suburban daredevil. He can still remember what he thought when he first saw a motorcycle
-- you could go even faster and you didn't have to peddle. Ever since then, he's been crazy
about motorcycles.
Well, for some reason, his parents wouldn't let him ride motorcycles when he was a
kid. So he had to settle for riding his Sears junker of a bike in motocross races
with friends. Strangely enough, he was still competitive even on his speed-deficient
mount.
He started following motorcycle racing on TV. Then bought his first motorcycle when
he left for college (Yes, hard to believe, but Steve did go to college. He even
graduated with a degree in Computer Science somehow). Some of his income in college
came from a job at a local motorcycle shop.
But his interest in motorcycles came to an abrupt hiatus during college when he had
a major accident. In avoiding a car that simply didn't see his bright-red motorcycle
on the road, Steve clipped a mailbox, hit a telephone pole guidewire and was uncermoniously
ejected into a ditch.
He was away from bikes for a few years. Then, some of his friends decided to attempt
racing. He got interested in motorcycles again when he discovered that race tracks didn't
have cars on them. He quickly discovered that he had a knack for racing that most of
his friends couldn't match.
He bought a Yamaha FZR 400 in 1996, which he took to the track completely stock. After
four weekends of racing, he won his first trophy at Roebling Roads in Goergia in 1997.
He's been racing ever since.
